“It would be better to build 100 prisons for 10 people each”
RESCALED advocates for detaining offenders in houses instead of prisons. Detention houses are small in scale, integrated in the community and differ in security levels, services and activities. They enable more effective and humane punishment and contribute to a safer and more inclusive society.
Replacing prisons with detention houses will result in a detention that is more humane, optimally suited to each individual and more effective at reintegration.. Because detention houses are small, incarcerated people are approached in a personal way and treated decently. Because detention houses are differentiated, incarcerated people are assigned to the right security categories and participate in optimally suited programs. Because detention houses are embedded in the community, incarcerated people remain connected to society and will return to freedom more successfully.

#MOVEMENT FOR SMALL DETENTION HOUSES
People in detention are deprived of their liberty for a given period. This period is considered to be proportional to the offense. This also means that after this period of imprisonment, these persons should be able to take part in society without additional difficulties, and the harm caused by the offense should be restored in some way. Regaining a place in society and restoring the harm is hard when the ties with society are broken while in prison. This is where the current prison system falls short.
